Readers who love tropes such as enemies-to-lovers, the one bed trope, or the protective love interest will also love this book. I recommend this book to anyone interested in getting back into reading again and needs an easy fantasy adventure to ease back into it. There’s also a twist within the book, which I enjoyed, but it felt sudden due to the lack of foreshadowing. Even though this book was an easy and fast-paced read, because it was short, the characters weren’t that well flushed out and lacked some relationship development due to the length of the book. With that being said, this book is geared towards younger, young adult readers or those who like light fantasy without extensive, world-building content. He’s the first mate (under the rank of captain) and a lot of the crew likes him, but Alosa (and others) question why he isn’t the captain, which leaves a mysterious air. Riden, her love interest, is just as interesting. She really exudes confidence with femininity which differ from some female protagonists who feel like they can’t be taken seriously if they enjoy “femine” things. This was light and humorous since it was written in first person, so readers really get to know the main character.Īlosa is an extremely relatable character she’s hot-headed and a strong female lead who likes to be in charge and knows what she’s doing while not being ashamed for liking “girly” things like clothes and her hair, and I’m partial to powerful characters who know how to use a sword. This book had a lot of the tropes that I generally gear towards like enemies-to-lovers and the one bed trope. This book was fast-paced and the tension between Alosa and Riden were off the charts. While this seems like a fairly easy task- retrieve the map and leave- Alosa must also deal with the infuriating but fairly attractive first mate: Riden.Īs a person who prefers character development to plot development, this book was a good choice, especially when pirates are involved. Alosa purposely gets captured by a different pirate ship to search for a missing part of a map, a map that when put together is supposed to reveal a big treasure, in order to search their ship. Essentially, Alosa, a pirate, is the daughter to the esteemed Pirate King who is known for his dangerous reputation.
